Mayer when the studio was offered the movie rights to a new novel, Gone with the Wind. The film Gone With the Wind has so far earned more than $840 million and celebrates its 50th anniversary in December 1989. Book Reveals The Inside "Poop"
About Hollywood's Amazing Animal Actors
Celebrity animals have been stealing scenes from their human co-stars for generations, and audiences love it! Now a new book reveals the inside "poop" about the amazing animal actors who have pawed and clawed their way into the hearts of Americans.
A warm, loving tribute to the two-footed, four-footed, flippered and finned creatures of Hollywood, Amazing Animal Actors (Taylor Publishing Company, $16.95 paperback) by Pauline Bartel highlights early movie stars such as Bonzo, Toto, and Rin Tin Tin; classic television favorites such as Mister Ed, Flipper, and Lassie; and contemporary stars like Bingo, Beethoven, and Babe.
Bartel profiles 40 all-star animal actors with complete biographies, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and interviews with co-stars and trainers. A special "Miscellaneous Menagerie" section spotlights dozens of other showbiz critters, like Morris the cat and Leo the MGM lion, who have "cat"apulted themselves to the top of American popular culture.
Favorite famous horses such as Trigger and Buttermilk, Silver, Champion, and Flicka are included as are celebrity canines such as Old Yeller, Asta, Benji, Murray, and Eddie. Moose, pigs, chimpanzees, bears, elk, elephants, whales and mules round out the cuddly cast.
In Amazing Animal Actors, you may be surprised to learn that:
- one of America's famous dog actors got his start working on the television show Petticoat Junction. After the series ended, 14-year-old Higgins retired but then accepted the lead role in a 1974 movie. Never heard of him? You probably know him better by his movie character's name - Benji!
- an eye doctor outfitted Clarence the Cross-Eyed Lion with a special pair of prescription glasses to correct his vision problem. Clarence wore the glasses and looked silly until the glasses proved to be useless and were subsequently discarded. Clarence was so gentle and easy going that he rarely snarled. When scenes in the television show Daktari required Clarence to emote, his double lion, Leo, was called upon to provide the requisite roars.
- Salty the cat on "Caroline In The City" broke into show biz by portraying Sassy in the 1993 movie Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. The Himalayan cat whose real name is Tiki had not only never acted before but had never been out of the house before!
- Traveler was the real name of The Lone Ranger's horse Silver. Traveler was camera shy. He hated the sound of the camera and showed his displeasure by refusing to obey the commands of his trainer. During scenes that did not require dialogue, the crew spoke loudly or made noise so that Traveler wouldn't hear the whir of the camera.
You can also find out how trainer Les Hilton really made Mister Ed talk, how Bonzo the chimp almost strangled actor Ronald Reagan, the secret about the ring around the eye of Pete the Pup from the "Our Gang" comedies, how Trigger earned the title of "The Smartest Horse in the Movies" and more.
Packed with photographs, Amazing Animal Actors is a heart-warming and loving scrapbook of all those funny, talented, and adorable animals whose on-screen antics have amazed and astounded movie goers and television viewers.
According to actress Shirley Jones, Amazing Animal Actors is "...the no-holds, behind-the-scenes, tell-all truth about our four-legged Flynns and Gables, Monroes and Grables. Absolutely adorable."
